You can see the Cincinnati Zoo’s new manatees, SwimShady, Alby & Manhattan, starting Sunday

The Cincinnati Zoo has adopted three orphaned manatees. They will be rehabilitated at the zoo and then returned to their home waters in Florida. SwimShady, Alby and Manhattan now call the Cincinnati Zoo their home. The Cincinnati Zoo says guests will be able to see the three manatees in Manatee Springs starting this Sunday. The trio, part of The US Fish & Wildlife Service’s The Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership, arrived in Cincinnati Wednesday morning. “We started renovating our manatee facility after our last two residents, Pippen and Truffleshuffle, returned to Florida in September 2020 and increased the construction plan that could house these three orphans. We were originally supposed to get two animals. The third animal was added due to the significant influx of rescued manatees at SeaWorld Orlando, ”said Winton Ray, curator of the Cincinnati Zoo. “We look forward to helping these teens grow and eventually return to their homes.” Two of the manatees already had names, Alby and Manhattan, and the MRP gave the Cincinnati Zoo an opportunity to name the third. The Manatee team got creative and decided on “SwimShady”, a piece named after the rapper’s song / nickname “SlimShady”. A gar called “Snoop Logg” is also based in Manatee Springs. Alby (male): Rescued as an orphan from the Halifax River in Volusia County, Florida on August 27, 2019. At the time of his rescue, he weighed 51 pounds. Alby weighed 215 pounds on October 27th. Manhattan (male): Rescued from St. Augustine Beach, St. Johns County, Florida as an orphan on October 28, 2019. At the time of his rescue, he weighed 62 pounds. Manhattan weighed 227 pounds on October 5. SwimShady (male): Rescued from Brevard County’s Berkley Canal as an orphan on December 19. At the time of his rescue, he weighed 198 pounds. Eighteen manatees rehabilitated at the Cincinnati Zoo have returned to Florida waters. Most recently, Truffleshuffle shuffled near Apollo Beach in the Tampa Bay area.
