Xavier Men’s Basketball is hiring former Arizona assistant Danny Peters

Xavier University has hired Danny Peters as the third assistant basketball coach for men, the school said on Friday.

Peters, a native of Cincinnati who played three years at Lakota East High School before moving to New Albany High School for his senior year, is replacing Ben Johnson, who was recently named head coach in Minnesota.

“I’ve known Danny since he was a student and we’ve stayed very close over the years,” said Xavier head coach Travis Steele. “He has a relentless work ethic and is a great coach. He has one of the best attackers in all of college basketball and is also known as a relentless recruiter. He did a great job developing guards in both Arizona and Ball State.” ” . ”

Peters has been assistant to former Xavier head coach Sean Miller at the University of Arizona for the past three seasons, and Miller isn’t his only Xavier connection.

Prior to Arizona, Peters worked under former Xavier assistant coach James Whitford at Ball State and played for former Xavier head coach Thad Matta in Ohio State. When Peters’ career as a player ended, he began his coaching career in Arizona for four years as a graduate manager and director of basketball operations from 2010 to 2014, then returned in 2018 as an assistant.

“I’m very excited to be joining the Xavier basketball family,” Peters said in a press release. “Xavier’s excellent winning tradition speaks for itself. I have worked with a former musketeer on every college basketball program I’ve participated in. Each of them speaks highly of the Xavier family. ”

Peters’ father, the late Dan Peters, was a longtime college basketball coach at Youngstown State and Walsh University and assistant to the staff of Bob Huggins in Cincinnati.

“He’s from here,” said Steele. “His father, Dan Peters, was Huggins’ right-hand man all these years.

“Danny has a high work capacity. I think that’s primarily when you’re the son of a coach, how he grew up. That’s all he does. It’s in his blood. He lives and breathes it. He. He.” is a great coach, really good offensive coach. Really good on the ground with player development and he’s a really good recruiter. He’s great at scouting and he does everything. So in the end I felt like we did a home run with him because he wasn’t an option until then. Coach Miller was sacked and is so loyal to Coach Miller that he has stayed the entire time. We are happy to have him. “

Danny joins Jonas Hayes and Dante Jackson as Xavier’s three assistant coaches on the bench. Xavier is still in the process of hiring Steele’s specialist assistants, a place vacated by Matthew Graves, who is now the assistant head coach in Indiana state, and the Musketeers are still looking for a head strength and conditioning coach after Matt Jennings was promoted .
