WKU appoints productive FCS passers-by as starting QB for 2021 | Sports

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky (WDRB) – Tyson Helton, head football coach at Western Kentucky University, announced his starting quarterback Tuesday, and his new starting quarterback announced that he is more than confident with his new team.

“I firmly believe that we will play 12-0,” said quarterback Bailey Zappe during the media day at the WKU.

The Houston Baptist graduate transfer delivered some gaudy stats in the huskies’ shortened 2020 season. In just four games, Zappe threw 1,833 yards with 15 touchdowns and only one interception.

Those stats, along with what Helton saw in person, were enough for him to put Zappe into fall camp as a starter for this week.

“He was with us in spring and summer. He’s been here long enough and our staff has been able to do evaluations, ”said Helton. “I think it’s better for us to go this season with this guy in place. He knows he’s the type. I think we can go ahead and say yes he will be the starter and move forward with it. “

“We had a great spring and a great summer, and of course I worked towards being the starter,” added Zappe (Lager). “

Zappe and the Hilltoppers start the 2021 campaign against UT-Martin in Bowling Green on September 2nd.
