They can be found all over TikTok, and they’ll be all over Cincinnati this summer.
A popular Mexican street food, Birria Tacos went viral via the popular video-sharing app in late 2020. Now they are showing up in more local menus.
What are birria tacos?
Birria tacos have their origins in Jalisco, a Mexican state. They were originally cooked with goat meat, today beef, lamb and chicken are typical alternatives.
The tacos start with a stew called birria, made up of meat, vegetables, chillies, and spices. Corn or flour tortillas are then dipped into the birria before being sautéed in a pan, making them crispy. Stew meat, cheese and other taco toppings are added to the tortillas. Finally, the tacos can be soaked in leftover birria to soak up all of the flavor without it getting mushy.
Many TikTok users have shared recipe variations on the app. But for those who don’t have the time, talent, or energy to make them at home, here are 10 places to find birria tacos in the greater Cincinnati area:
Drunk tacos
The Cincinnati Taco Food Truck is selling beef birria tacos with consommé this summer in addition to its other taco, burrito, and quesadilla dishes. You can find the current location map on the Facebook page.
Gutierrez Deli De
In addition to a variety of imported Central American and Mexican products, Gutierrez Deli offers Birria tacos. Stay up to date on the family-run Hispanic shop’s Facebook page for the latest deals. Located at 1131 Lee Street in Covington.
Another potential Birria hotspot is OLLA Taqueria Gutierrez, just a hundred yards down the street at 302 W. MLK. Jr. Blvd. The taco shop, which opened in June, is open Tuesday through Sunday.
Jorge’s Taco Food Truck
Head to Jorge’s Monday through Saturday between 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM for quesabirria, cheese-laden beef birria tacos. Located at 3980 Erie Ave. Follow her Instagram for the latest updates, Birria and others.
Mazunte center
Hurry if you want birria tacos from Mazunte Centro – they’re seasonal. The beef, queso oaxaca, avocado salsa, salsa amarilla, onion and coriander tacos are available for eat-in or take-away in downtown Mazunte at 611 Main Street.
My taco locomotive
After a winter test run, Mi Taco Loco put its Birria Beef Tacos on its regular menu. Customers can purchase one taco for $ 3.95 or three for $ 11. The authentic Mexican and Guatemalan restaurant is located on Northland Blvd 610.
Red-legged taqueria
Get three Birria tacos for $ 10 this summer at Pata Roja Taqueria. Located behind Bar Saeso at 1208 Sycamore St., his specialty is authentic Mexico City-style street tacos.
Taqueria 251
What better couple than tacos and drinks? Taqueria 251, a taco, tequila and mezcal bar, offers both. In addition to other authentic Mexican street foods, it also sells the trendy Birria tacos, often with a twist. Located at Northside, 4110 Hamilton Ave.
Taqueria El Monarca
You might not find birria tacos on the menu, but don’t worry, an order of the popular Mexican street food is currently available for $ 11.99 at Taqueria El Monarca. They are only sold on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Located at Springdale, 11449 Princeton Pike.
Taqueria market
As a family-run restaurant, the Taqueria Mercado values traditional Mexican recipes. The updated menu includes birria tacos for $ 3 and birria de chivo (goat soup) for just $ 8.75, both of which are available as weekend specials. Located downtown at 100 E. Eighth St.
Tortilleria Garcia
If Taco Tuesday wasn’t enough to satisfy the craving, Tortilleria Garcia has it covered. On Saturdays, it offers Birria tacos at its College Hill location at 5917 Hamilton Ave.
Veracruz Mexican grill
After Birria tacos debuted last winter when they first gained TikTok popularity, Veracruz Mexican Grill is selling Mexican street food again. Located at 3108 Price Ave.
