Tennis: Nishikori was defeated by ‘stronger’ Nishioka in the all-Japanese competition in Cincinnati, Tennis News & Top Stories

CINCINNATI (AFP) – Kei Nishikori lost 7: 6 (7: 2) and 6: 4 in the second round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters against his Japanese compatriot Yoshihito Nishioka on Wednesday (August 14).

The sixth seed went to his 77th compatriot, who survived qualifying, in just over 90 minutes.

“It was a tough game for me. I think he played good tennis and did good service,” said Nishikori.

“I was happy to play him for the first time. It’s nice to see him get stronger and grow up. He was already good, he gets a lot of balls back and he has a good defense.”

Nishikori never passed the third round in the US Open warm-up event.

Nishioka will next meet the Australian Alex de Minaur, who won 7: 6 (7: 3) and 6: 4 against the American wildcard Reilly Opelka.
