NEWBERRY – The last charge in the Newberry furnace was Tuesday and the furnace started operating at 2:30 p.m., starting with the shutdown of the pig iron and chemical section of the Newberry Lumber and Chemical Company of that location. The fires were not drawn and will be kept alive when circumstances warrant. The test tubes were stopped last night, but there will be enough alcohol in the chemical department to continue until the end of the week. With about two million feet of cut wood in the woods, the warehouses will close this week, but the crews will mostly be busy loading for shipping to the plant.
