Luis Castillo

June was an outstanding month for Luis Castillo. After struggling in the first two months of the year, the right-handed man made five starts in June and scored an ERA of 1.71 while throwing 31.2 innings and allowing only one home run.

He hasn’t shown much of splits this season when it comes to overall production. Right-handers hit .277 / .335 / .434 against him, while left-handers hit .266 / .359 / .396 against him. The OPS difference is only 15 points, but how they get there is different. Right-handed people hit for a bit more power, while left-handed people pull more walks (and strike out a lot more). His ERA at home is slightly lower at 4.89 than on the street at 5.40.

Ryan Weathers

The son of former Reds seamstress David Weathers returns to Cincinnati. Ryan Weathers is in his rookie season and the 21-year-old has more than held his own. He was outstanding because he split the time between rotation and bullpen and has made eight starts and six substitute missions for the Padres this year. He has posted a 2.47 ERA in 47.1 innings with 13 walks and 34 strikeouts.

As a left-handed pitcher, you’d expect him to be better with left-handed people, and so far he’s done just that in his career. Left-handers only hit .214 / .254 / .250 against him in 59 record appearances. Righties only beat 0.205 with a .274 on base percentage against him – but when they get hits they opt for extra bases as they beat .420 out of the 23 hits thanks to six doubles and six homers he has right-handed in 125 Record appearances allowed. He did better as a reliever but did well as a starter with 2.78 ERA in 32.1 innings.

Michael Lorenzen starts his rehab assignment

The Reds officially sent Michael Lorenzen on a rehab assignment today. He will join the Arizona Complex League Reds at Goodyear. Lorenzen will work his way back with a plan to switch to the Cincinnati Bullpen after the All-Star hiatus.
