Tottenham Hotspur could secure a major midfield upgrade this summer.
According to Football.London reporter Alasdair Gold, Spurs have a specific interest in signing RB Leipzig skipper Marcel Sabitzer before the next season.
It is assumed that Daniel Levy and Co will switch for the 27-year-old Talisman this summer when he enters the final 12 months of his current contract at the Red Bull Arena.
Sport Bild has also fueled the fire in recent weeks, claiming that there is a “75% chance” that Sabitzer will land in north London despite the interest of Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool. RB Leipzig is said to want 42 million euros for his signature.
Should Spurs sign Sabitzer?
Jose Mourinho is not short of opportunities in midfield, however, so any arrival in the role would surely mean the end for someone who is already at the club. As Football FanCast stated earlier this week, Moussa Sissoko has started pulling back at an alarming rate, which is no surprise given he is now on the wrong side of 30.
In comparison, Sabitzer would be a massive increase in quality.
In fact, Sissoko doesn’t really offer much at either end of the field – according to WhoScored, the 31-year-old Frenchman averages one tackle and one interception per game on the defensive, while in attack he only manages 0.8 dribbles and 0.2 key passes per game and did not contribute to a goal. All of these numbers are a drop from its 2019/20 numbers.
The RB Leipzig Sensation is a far better box-to-box option in the middle. In addition to 23 goals and 19 assists in the last 18 months, Sabitzer has done a lot of hard work to win the ball back with an average of 1.1 tackles and. 1.4 interceptions per match via WhoScored.
The gem, with a rating of £ 36million, clearly knows what to do in the final third. This can be seen in his impressive earnings and the fact that he was called a “goal threat” by his manager Julian Nagelsmann. It’s easy to see why he’s had such an impact, as he’s averaged two shots and one key pass per Bundesliga game this season.
Spurs know how dangerous he can be as he absolutely tormented Eric Dier and the rest of the squad last season, knocking the North Londoners out of the Champions League over the last 16 legs.
Sabitzer won the second leg 3-0, got a brace and ran the show with 67 strokes (the third highest for the German team), three interceptions and one tackle. His subsequent rating of 7.7 according to SofaScore far exceeded Dier’s (6.6) as the England international had a hot night.
Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard gave the Spurs man a 5/10 that night, writing: “No game for Leipzig’s Fast Front 3 and almost guilty of a terrible mistake when he fired a clearance straight at Schick and forced Lloris to parry. “
Sabitzer would also bring leadership skills to N17. “He has clearly changed for the better and has become a leader. What is remarkable is the way in which he developed his personality. I’ve rarely seen anything similar, ”explained his former coach Ralf Rangnick Kicker (via Bulinews).
Levy has to say goodbye to Sissoko this summer and win Sabitzer.
AND in other news, Spurs could kill two birds with one stone by signing an “absolute monster” with a rating of £ 22.5m …
