Plastic bags are here to linger a little longer in the Cincinnati Kroger stores. Kroger is delaying plans to get rid of single-use plastic bags around town in June. Earlier this month, Kroger announced June 1 that Cincinnati Kroger stores will be eliminating single-use plastic bags. Several stores across the region distributed flyers to current customers informing them of the big changes. These flyers read that plastic bag cutting “in conjunction with Cincinnati City’s Plastic Bag Ban” is part of the business’s Zero Hunger initiative. The change only applies to businesses within the Cincinnati city limits. However, on Wednesday Kroger released a statement stating, “We look forward to continuing to work with the city as we take a significant step forward in creating a waste-free community and we are ready to comply with the bag ban in January 2022.” “The COVID-19 pandemic has tarnished Cincinnati’s plastic bag ban, passed by the city council in September 2020. This ban was supposed to come into effect on January 1 of this year, but has been postponed due to the pandemic. The regulation was originally proposed by Councilor Chris Seelbach to reduce waste, waste and pollution. In his statement, Kroger also proposed the Ohio Gov. bill. Mike DeWine proposed banning single-use plastic bags as a reason for the delay. DeWine signed House Bill 242 on October 13, 2020. House Bill 242 imposed a one-year moratorium on regulations governing the use of single-use plastic containers. “I’m going to sign the bill because it’s temporary. I think you can make an argument for it during the COVID period, ”the governor said last year. “For example, it includes styrofoam – people get takeaway and so on. It’s not just about plastic bags. “In line with Governor DeWine’s short-term ban on single-use plastic bags, the city of Cincinnati is expected to begin enforcing the single-use plastic bag ban in January 2022,” Kroger said in the statement Wednesday. Kroger officials are still encouraging customers to bring their reusable bags every time they visit a store and recycle all plastic bags. Kroger said it continues to work to end the use of plastic bags in its stores by 2025.
