Kontaveit and her partner Maria Sakkari (Greece) defeated Raluca-Ioana Olaru (Romania) and Yang Zhaoxuan (China) in three sets. After losing the first set 6-4, the pair won the second set 6-2, with a longer third set ending 10-8. Olaru and Zhaoxuan made seven double mistakes at Kontaveit and Sakkaris, reports the ERR sports portal.
The duo will face Hsieh Su-Wei (Taiwan) and Barbora Strýcová (Czech Republic) in the next round at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, OH, northeast of Cincinnati. As with most US outdoor hard court tournaments, the event for the US Open is warmer during the month.
Kontaveit, who recently lowered a place in the WTA rankings to 20th place, will face former world number Angelique Kerber (Germany) in singles on Tuesday.
