Justin Hilliard – 4-3 Outside Linebacker Ohio State Buckeyes Scouting Report

JUSTIN HILLIARD | Ohio State | OB | # 47 | Sr | 6006 | 227 | 4.70e | Cincinnati, OH | St. Xavier

Overview:

Hilliard, a former five-star recruit, had injury issues that prevented him from taking a starting role in the talented linebacker space of the Ohio state. The undersized full-line defender is a strong tackler who takes efficient angles with the ball and has a pop behind his pads to stop the momentum of the ball carriers and bring them down. Hilliard shows quick hands to stay clean while flowing sideways in the room and even flashes the ability to stack blocks and set the ledge. As an experienced player, he trusts his eyes, reads the mesh point quickly and releases aggressively downhill. This can defeat him if he reads the line of scrimmage, which prompts him to take advantage of run-pass options. The Ohio native has movement skills at close range that make him capable in sub-zones. He can stop his swing and quickly change direction. In a straight line it is average and on the second level shows enough range for the NFL game. His inability to quickly gain depth when pedaling back due to sloppy feet affects his zone coverage ability. Hilliard could be a potential theft as he is a talented linebacker buried on the Ohio State depth map. When he’s on the field, he shows attack strength and athleticism, which should at least be reflected in a role in special teams. Its best fit is on the next level at WILL Backer.
