Esplanande named Ohio Horse of the Year 2020 – Horse Racing News

The undefeated filly Esplanande held her record flawless by winning the 29th run of the $ 100,000 Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes for Ohio registered 2-year-olds

Esplanande, who beat all challengers in her home state and made an impact on the national stage, was named Ohio Horse of the Year 2020 by the Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners.

The Daredevil filly won three of four starts last year, won the Belterra Park debut with 6 1/4 lengths, and then took the Hoover Stakes on the same track with a front running trip. Esplanande then shipped north to Thistledown for the Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes, where she re-led at each point on the call to win by 4 1/4 lengths.

The filly then tested deeper waters and sent her to Saratoga for her final start to the season to earn the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes. She led through the early factions but ended up finishing second after future Eclipse Award winner Vequist.

Esplanande is part of the partnership of Winstar Farm LLC, Blazing Meadows Farm LLC and Michael Lewis. She was also bred by WinStar and Blazing Meadows and trained by Tim Hamm.

The filly’s owning group was also named Ohio Owners of the Year, and Esplanande received additional awards as the Ohio Champion’s 2-year-old filly. Southern Silence, the dam of Esplanande, was also named broodmare of the year in Ohio.

This year’s winners were selected by a committee made up of Lawrence “Bill” Couch, Ed Vomacka and Hugh Drexler – race secretaries on every Ohio Thoroughbred circuit – and Bob “Railbird” Roberts, the award-winning Cleveland Plain former turf clerk, dealer .
