I AM INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THE WORK OF THE URBAN LEAGUE STAFF AND PARTNERS OVER THE PAST YEAR TO MAKE SURE FOLKS HAVE RELIEF AND THAT PEOPLE THAT HAVE DREAMS, WE ACTUALIZE THEM TO WORK WITH THEM HAND IN HAND TO SUPPORT THEM. WE ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL TO OUR SPONSORS FOR THIS EVENT. WHEN WE THINK ABOUT WHAT THE CITY NEEDS, WE ARE EXCITED TO HAVE YOU PARTNER WITH US. I THANK YOU FOR HAVING THIS CONVERSATION. >> THANKS FOR HOSTING. ONE THING IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME AND THAT IS TALKING ABOUT THE VACCINE AND THIS PANDEMIC. THIS PANDEMIC HAS REALLY AFFECTED THE WORLD IN A PROFOUND WAY. I AM TRYING TO USE MY PLATFORM, AND I KNOW YOU ARE DOING THE SAME, TO TRY TO MAKE A DIFFERENT. >> WE TRY TO USE OUR TRUST AS A CREDIBLE COMMUNITY PARTNER TO SAY, HERE ARE THE FACTS WE HAVE RESEARCHED ABOUT THE VACCINE. AND WHEN YOU ARE READY, WE HAVE A PLACE YOU CAN COME YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH TO GET THE VACCINATION. >> THE VACCINATION AND DEALING WITH COVID FROM A MEDICAL PERSPECTIVE IS ONE THING. IT HAS BEEN PROFOUND IN HOW IT HAS AFFECTED THE WORLD. I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS THAT HONESTLY LOST THEIR JOBS. NOW, THAT JOBS ARE COMING BACK, THERE IS A LOT OF CONFUSION OUT THERE. PEOPLE ARE CONSIDERING NOT GOING BACK TO WORK. >> THERE IS A BIG MISCONCEPTION NOW ABOUT PEOPLE NOT WANTING TO WORK. THERE IS A TALENT SHORTAGE. I THINK WHAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING NOW IS THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF WORK. WE ARE USED TO THE IDEA OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE INCOME AND OUR MIDDLE-CLASS MAKING CHOICES. THEY CAN SAY, I DO NOT LIKE THIS JOB. IT IS NOT A GOOD COMPENSATION PACKAGE. IT IS NOT HAVE BENEFITS. WE ARE USED TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE AFFLUENCE TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. WE ARE NOT USED TO DO PEOPLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ECONOMIC SCALE HAVING CHOICE AND OPPORTUNITY. THAT IS A NEW SPACE FOR BUSINESSES AND BUSINESS OWNERS. WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE ENTIRE SUPPLY CHAIN OF LABOR. HOW DO WE PROTECT EVERYONE TO HAVE A LIVABLE WAGE? TO HAVE BENEFITS THEY DESERVE? SO, THEY WON’T HAVE TO BE SUBSIDIZED BY THE GOVERNMENT. ALL OF THE WORK WE HAVE DONE HAS BEEN THE RESULT OF OUR INCREDIBLE DONORS WHO SEE THE VALUE OF INVESTING IN AN ORGANIZATION LIKELY URBAN LEAGUE. IT IS THE LARGEST CIVIL-RIGHTS AND WORKFORCE ORGANIZATION IN OHIO. THAT IS BLACK LEAD, THAT HAS BEEN IN THE COMMUNITY. WE REALLY NEED THE SUPPORT OF THE PUBLIC TO CONTINUE THE WORK WE ARE DOING. LESS THAN 1% OF ALL PHILANTHROPIC DOLLARS GOES TO BLACK LEAD ORGANIZATIONS. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMIC, — IN 2019 WE SERVED 18,000 PEOPLE. WE ARE NOW AT 40,000 PEOPLE IN METRO CINCINNATI AND DAYTON. IT IS A TREMENDOUS BURDEN ON STAFF TO MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE READY AND WILLING TO HAVE CHANGE IN THEIR LIVES HAVE AN ORGANIZATION ABLE TO DO THAT AND TO ATTACK THE POLICY ISSUES THAT ALLOW THESE NUMBERS AND POVERTY TO PERSIST. >> IT IS CERTAINLY OBVIOUS THAT YOU ARE MAKING AN IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITIES. I THINK THE WORK YOU ARE DOING IS TERRIFIC. I ASK THE PUBLIC TO SUPPORT THE URBAN LEAGUE AND DONATE TODAY. ♪ >> MY NAME IS KALA GIBSON FOR FIFTH THIRD BANK. HOW DO WE CHANGE THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE THAT RESIDE IN THOSE COMMUNITIES? EVERYTHING FROM AFFORDABLE HOUSING TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION, TRYING TO SOLVE THE CHALLENGES WE HAVE AS IT RELATES TO FINANCIAL DESERTS AND FOOD DESERTS. I AM THE ORDER OF STORMS SECURE SERVICE AS PREMIER SECURITY SERVICE IN THE GREATER CINCINNATI AREA. WE HAVE BEEN PROVIDING SECURITY FOR MAJOR FILMS IN THE CINCINNATI AREA. 6 2019 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR. THEN THE PANDEMIC HAPPENED. I WENT FROM MAKING $215,000 IN SALES IN 2019 TO MAKING $20,000 IN 2020. THAT IS A SIGNIFICANT LOSS. BUT, AS I WAS TELLING SOMEBODY ELSE, IT MAY HAVE BEEN A LOSS ON A LOSS IN SALES, BUT IT WAS GROSS IN OTHER AREAS. THE RESILIENCY FUND HAS HELPED ME ESTABLISH AN OFFICE SPACE AND COVER MY UTILITIES FOR MY NEW OFFICE. I AM NOW ABLE TO HIRE A FULL-TIME PERSON. SOMEBODY HAS A JOB, ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE FOR THEMSELVES. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY A GODSEND. HONESTLY. BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE A BUSINESS BACKGROUND. I HAVE A COMMUNICATIONS DEGREE AT A MASTERS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE. SO BE ABLE TO GET BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT WAS VALUABLE. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO PASS STORM SECURE SERVICES DOWN TO MY FAMILY WHEN I HAVE CHILDREN ONE DAY. I WANTED TO BE A LEGACY. I WANTED TO CREATE GENERATIONAL WEALTH. I WANT MY BUSINESS TO CONTINUE TO HELP OTHERS MAKE A WAY FOR THEMSELVES. ♪ >> THE PARTNERING CENTER SERVES THE COMMUNITY BY WORKING TO DE-ESCALATE AND PREVENT VIOLENCE. OUR OVERALL GOAL WITH OUR MENTORING PROGRAM IS THAT INDIVIDUALS BUILD A LIFE PLAN BASED OFF HOPE, OPPORTUNITY, CHOICES, AND CONSEQUENCES. WHATEVER THEIR HOPES AND DESIRES ARE, OUR DESIRE IS TO HELP THEM BUILD THE SOCIAL CAPITAL AND RELATIONSHIPS TO GET PEOPLE, ORGANIZATIONS, INSTITUTIONS AROUND THEM TO WHERE THEY CAN PRESENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM TO SUCCEED. I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT THE WORK I DO. I LOVE TO SEE INDIVIDUALS, ESPECIALLY IN UNDERSERVED NEIGHBORHOODS. I WANT TO SEE THEM HAVE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE. I JUST WANT TO SEE THOSE INDIVIDUALS IN THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS BE A PART AND INCLUDED IN A PROCESS OF REBUILDING. GUN VIOLENCE, EVEN THOUGH IT HAPPENS, OFTEN, IN TOP 10 NEIGHBORHOODS, IT IS A CINCINNATI ISSUE. CINCINNATI AS A WHOLE NEEDS TO TAKE A LOOK AND KNOW THAT NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO GUN VIOLENCE. THE PROGRAM IS ABOUT TO REACH ONE AND TEACH ONE. PULLED THEM UP AND LET THEM KNOW SOMEONE IS HERE TO SUPPORT THEM. WE BELIEVE IN THEM. WE EMPOWER THEM TO MOVE FORWARD. WHEN I THINK OF A SUCCESS STORY, I HAD A YOUNG MOTHER THAT CAME IN THAT HAD ADDITIONAL BARRIERS. SHE DID NOT HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. SHE HAD NO FAMILY SUPPORT. THAT IS WHEN THE INDIVIDUAL OPPORTUNITY PLAN COMES INTO PLACE TO HELP THEM THINK THEIR PROCESS OUT. WORKING WITH HER, WE DID ENROLLED HER IN TWO SCHOOLS. SHE DIDN’T GET HER HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, BUT ALSO, THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENROLL FOR THE STATE TESTED NURSING ASSISTANT PROGRAM. SHE IS CURRENTLY WORKING FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR MANY YEARS. I LOVE TO SEE THE YOUNG WOMEN, AND SAY, I DID IT THANKS TO YOU. I ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO THEM AND SAY, IT WAS YOU WHO MADE YOUR CHANGE AREA I JUST HELPED YOU. THAT’S WITH YOUR CHANGE — IT WAS YOU WHO MADE YOUR CHANGE. I JUST HELP YOU. >> THE SOAR PROGRAM EMPOWERS INDIVIDUALS IN CINCINNATI AND DAYTON TO REACH CAREER GOALS THROUGH TRAINING PATHWAYS, AND JOB PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES. IT COST 28 OPERATIVE — $2800 TO PUT AN INDIVIDUAL THROUGH THE PROGRAM. THESE CONSIDER DONATING TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY. >> WE WORK TO HELP INDIVIDUALS GAIN THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO NOT ONLY GET A JOB, BUT TO KEEP A JOB. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF GOING THROUGH THE PROGRAM WITH THE URBAN LEAGUE. I GOT LABELED THE O.T. OF THE GROUP BECAUSE I WAS THE OLDER PERSON. I AM 61. I HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED AND HAD DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES BEFORE. SO MY THING IS, WE HAD YOUTH IN THEIR, PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT AGES, AND WE WERE ALL ABLE TO POUNCE OFF EACH OTHER. WE TALKED ABOUT THINGS LIKE INTERVIEWING SKILLS. WE TALKED ABOUT MINDSET. WE TALKED ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE PEOPLE IN YOUR JOB. WE HAD VARIOUS BREAKOUT SESSIONS AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE PEOPLE COME AND SPEAK WITH US ON TOPICS CONCERNING THAT. >> ONCE THEY GRADUATE FROM THE WEEKLONG TRAINING, THEY FOLLOW UP AND HAVE A ONE-ON-ONE APPOINTMENT WITH A LIFE AND CAREER SPECIALISTS SUCH AS MYSELF TO WEAR — WHERE I WORK WITH THEM TO CREATE GOALSETTING. I AM NOT GOING TO FIND YOU A JOB ON THE EAST SIDE IF YOU LIVE ON THE WEST SIDE. I WANT TO BE STRATEGIC. I WOULD RATHER WORK WITH YOU ONE MONTH AND FIND YOU EMPLOYMENT THAT YOU LIKE THAN JUST THROWING YOU IN SOMETHING AND THEN YOU ARE BACK IN MY OFFICE IN A MONTH. THAT IS NOT THE POINT. THAT IS NOT WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO IN OUR COMMUNITY. >> THE IDEA OF A COMMUNITY BANK FITS VERY WELL WITH THE STRATEGY AND DIVISION OF THE URBAN LEAGUE. THIS IDEA THAT THROUGH STRENGTHENING AND EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALS, WE SET UP GENERATIONS OF FAMILIES FOR SUCCESS. BOTH IN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT LIKE THE SOAR PROGRAM FOR THE URBAN LEAGUE AND THE SUMMER BANKING INSTITUTE FOR UNION AND GUARDIAN. WE ARE INVESTED IN THE YEAR BEEN LEAGUE. MAKING A DONATION USING THAT QR CODE, YOU CAN HELP CONTINUE THIS GOOD WORK. >> AS A LIAISON BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE POLICE WE WORK WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENTS TO GATHER INFORMATION. WE TAKE THAT INFORMATION BACK OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY IN A WAY THAT THEY CAN DIGEST IT AND UNDERSTAND. SO, THEY CAN BECOME EDUCATED ON WHAT IS GOING ON WITH POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND ALSO HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR POLICE REFORM. IT IS THESE COLLABORATIONS THAT OCCURRED THAT HAVE A GREATER IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY. BECAUSE, IT GIVES THE COMMUNITY A VOICE TO THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DEPARTMENT. IT ALSO HELPS POLICE DEPARTMENTS ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY. THE IMPACT OF POLICE MISCONDUCT DOES NOT JUST TO START WITH THE INCIDENTS WE SEE IN THE MEDIA.
