The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds meet Sunday afternoon in a NL Central Division matchup in MLB action from the Great American Ballpark.
The St. Louis Cardinals will try to recover from a 6-6 loss to the Reds in their second game on Saturday. Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong each had two hits with two RBIs, with Arenado hitting a split home run while DeJong hit a pair of solo homers. Dylan Carlson also added an RBI while Paul Goldschmidt, Tyler O’Neill and Yadier Molina each had a base hit to end the offensive in the defeat for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright took the loss after allowing six runs with seven hits over 2.2 innings of work. Carlos Martinez will start here and was 3-0 with 9.90 ERA and 17 spikes last season. In his career, Martinez is 8-5 with an ERA of 4.07 and 107 spikes against Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Reds will end the series’ comeback after beating the Cardinals on Saturday. Mike Moustakas had a double and an RBI and Eugenio Suarez and Jonathan India each had an RBI. Jesse Winker, Nick Castellanos and Joey Votto each added a base goal to end Cincinnati’s offensive in victories. St. Louis is 8-2 in their last 10 division games and 5-1 in their last 6 Sunday games while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 street games. Cincinnati is 8-3 in their last 11 home games and 1-4 in their last 5 games overall, while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter. The finish is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Cincinnati.
I understand why the Reds are worth a look as a home dog, but Hoffman wasn’t good at the limited action we saw him last season. Martinez wasn’t either, but Carlos Martinez has had a solid reputation for a lot longer than last season and he’s been a serious arm for the Cardinals for much longer. I think that’s decent value we get with the cards so give me St. Louis in this one.
