Despite calls on actors, athletes, musicians, and other celebrities to avoid activism in order to focus on entertainment, there is a long-standing precedent for famous people to use their platforms to create change.
From Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier, who established themselves as leaders during the civil rights movement, to Leonardo DiCaprio and Jane Fonda among many stars who advocate environmental protection and justice, hundreds, if not thousands, of celebrities have popped the needle in the past century a variety of causes. Today’s celebrities often use their coats to protest animal cruelty, police brutality, government surveillance, military action, environmental injustice, and civil rights among dozen other causes.
Stacker highlighted 50 celebrities from the past 75 years with a protest story. Our list includes actors, athletes, and musicians. Several of the contemporary stars made headlines in 2020 for their efforts to support the Black Lives Matter movement and appeared in numerous protests following the killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and many others. Others were instrumental in the successful closure of the Keystone XL pipeline.
