Black holes are one of the phenomena of space that has puzzled scientists for more than 100 years. But as physicist Professor Brian Cox said Joe Rogan in his PowerfulJRE podcast that same year, scientists still struggle to understand what exactly is happening in the huge, seemingly empty, and almost invisible phenomena that appear almost everywhere in space are found.

Talking about black holes that are not in the center of galaxies, he said, “These little black holes are a couple of times the mass of the sun.

“They come from collapsed stars, so they’re end of life stars, bigger than the sun – more massive than the sun.

“They’re running out of fuel and they’re starting to collapse because gravity is crushing them.

“And if they are massive enough, nothing can stop the collapse.

“And so, as far as we know, they collapse to a point – essentially an infinitely dense point.

“We don’t know what exactly happens in the middle.

“But they collapse to such an extent that there is a region from which no light can escape, so nothing can escape.

“And that’s a black hole.”

Professor Cox follows a long line of scientists who have devoted considerable time to black holes.

Professor Stephen Hawking, the late theoretical physicist and cosmologist, is credited with doing the most groundbreaking work in the field.

He continued, “If a space agency were to control it from Earth or anywhere outside the black hole, they would observe that each full orbit lasted 16 minutes.

“But time would slow down for the brave people on board who are near this massive object.

“Here the effect would be far more extreme than in the vicinity of the pyramid or planet Earth.

“The occupation time would be cut in half.

“For each 16-minute orbit, they would only have eight minutes.

“The ship and its crew would travel through time.”
