“We have always viewed LUNAR as a great leap forward and a trailblazer when it comes to improving the safety of firefighters.”
As a result of years of direct cooperation with Firefighters, LUNAR uses cloud technology to provide Incident Commanders with groundbreaking functions for managing fire scenes. According to Nish VartanianThe introduction of LUNAR, MSA Chairman, President and CEO, aligns with the company’s vision to lead the introduction of new technologies that protect lives.
“We have always viewed LUNAR and its many potential applications as a huge leap forward and a trailblazer in improving the safety of firefighters,” said Vartanian. “Based on feedback from firefighters our team has received through months of LUNAR testing and evaluations with hundreds of firefighters around the world, we believe LUNAR has real potential to change the way we fight fires become.”
Mr. Vartanian added that LUNAR is a great example of how MSA has continued to invest in research and development and technology to advance its vision of protecting firefighters from head to toe.
“We understand our customers on a deep level. We listen to them, watch them and learn from them. With this knowledge, we look for ways to use new and advanced technologies to protect them, solve their problems and make their day easier . “
LUNAR is versatile and can be used as a standalone device or as part of an MSA-SCBA system. The main features include:
- Exclusive Firefighting Assisting Search (FAST) technology that combines distance and direction data and enables firefighters to find separate team members faster when every second counts.
- Personal thermal imaging with edge detection for improved situational awareness;
- Direct cellular cloud connectivity to send real-time statistics, including estimated air pressure, time remaining, and battery life, to Incident Command and remote monitoring personnel for a complete safety view; and
- A unique LUNAR-to-LUNAR network that automatically connects each device to all other devices on site.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there was a 35% increase in mayday calls during the COVID pandemic, with more than 40% of mayday calls never making to rescue teams due to radio communication issues. Jason TraynorAccording to MSA’s General Manager for Global Fire Fighting Products, LUNAR will help alleviate this burden.
“The ability to stay connected with your team can make all the difference during a rescue mission,” said Traynor. “To prepare for a day that is more unpredictable than ever, firefighters need advanced tools that will connect people on and off the scene and support the safety of the entire team with accountability, technology and data-driven insight that will LUNAR do that and more. “
Connected Technologies help make firefighters safer than ever
Designed for every firefighter in the field, both in the air and off, LUNAR is the latest addition to a suite – or ecosystem – of MSA products that the company has referred to as the “Connected Firefighter”. Taken together, MSA’s Connected Firefighter products provide increased visibility, efficiency, situational awareness and accountability, while at the same time creating an improved safety network.
“Accountability for all firefighters in a fire site was a consistent need for the fire service, but it has also been a challenge for many manufacturers to resolve,” said Traynor. “When thinking about what we could do to improve the safety of firefighters, we took a holistic approach to building a connected ecosystem of products where the sum of its components is key to making firefighters better connected and better safer than ever to hold. ”
Other MSA Connected Firefighter platform products include:
- The company’s industry-leading G1 and M1 respirators;
- The MSA HUB, a small, modular device that enables data management on-site and asset management.
- FireGrid, which enables incident commanders to assess and manage multiple situations simultaneously from any location; and
- The company’s ALTAIR 4XR and 5X portable multigas detectors with embedded Bluetooth technology provide complete scene management.
Respond to increased demand during a pandemic with virtual live demos
Despite the ongoing global pandemic, LUNAR has already aroused great interest and demand worldwide. To meet this growing need, the company today announced the launch of a live virtual demo that will allow firefighters to learn more about LUNAR from the comfort of their own fire station, at a time that works best for them.
The launch of this full online experience is another example of the company’s continued investment in a go-to-market strategy that delivers the unique experience that today’s customers have come to expect. “As we continue to fulfill our mission to keep people safe at work, I believe we are in a unique position to exceed the expectations of those who trust the MSA brand and do so in the way they expect from MSA – with speed, agility and customer-centric innovation, “concluded Vartanian.
