History of Belterra Park Cincinnati
Like many racinos, Belterra Park opened as the Coney Island Racetrack in 1925, right on the banks of the Ohio River. Perhaps the most notable events in the circuit’s early years were the two appearances of horse racing legend Seabiscuit in 1936, finishing third in both races.
The 1937 Cincinnati flood severely damaged the circuit. However, the route was salvaged and reopened under the name River Downs. Almost two decades later, in 1956, the track became one of only 13 tracks with a grass stripe.
River Downs Jockey Club Inc. bought the track in 1975 and began looking for a grandstand renovation project in the mid-1980s after the 1988 horse racing season.
In 1996, Ohio lawmakers allowed full card simulcasting in the state, which resulted in the River Downs Race Book becoming the most advanced simulcasting center in America.
Despite the newfound success of River Downs, the route fell victim to the site adjacent to the Ohio River again during the 1997 Cincinnati Flood. The city’s worst flood in five decades. The flood affected the lower level of the clubhouse and the grandstand.
Pinnacle Entertainment acquired the title in January 2011 before Boyd Gaming bought the title along with three other casinos in 2018. At the time of this writing, Boyd Gaming continues to own and operate the track and casino.
