CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball scored four home runs in an opening 10-6 win over Tulane in the American Athletic Conference on Thursday afternoon at UC Baseball Stadium.

Cincinnati (26-24, 15-14 AAC) got homers from Cole Harting (9), Jace Mercer (8), Ryan Nicholson (5) and Eric Santiago (7) in victory. Tulane (28-19, 17-7 AAC) added three home runs of her own on a warm and sunny day in Queen City.

Mercer put UC starter Garrett Schoenle 5-0 after beating a grand slam off the scoreboard in right field in the second inning, his ninth round tripper of the season. The Bearcats load the bases with three straight singles. By Ryan Nicholson, Paul Komistek and Griffin Merritt, before an infield single from Joe Powell landed in no man’s land and Nicholson scored. Mercer’s poke off the board came next on a 1-0 counter.

Schoenle (6-3), who was on a pitch count, gave up a single hit in three innings and fanned out four. He will open the AAC championship for UC on the hill next Tuesday in Clearwater, Florida.

UC scored 8-1 in game five after Nicholson narrowly missed Fifth Third Arena with a home run ball of his own. Again, the single was friendly to the Bearcats as Mercer took the lead with a tap on the right side and Bellini hit one on the left to get runners into the corners with no outs. Nicholson sent a 0-1 offer heavenward over the right fence for his fifth homer of the campaign.

Santiago switched one over the left fence to lead the seventh and scored the 10-3 Cincinnati result.
